Snow Day Twinkie

I have been busy studying for exams this week, so here are a few projects I worked on while it was still cold outside. My friend’s daughter turned 4 a couple of weeks ago, so I made her one of Twinkie Chan’s cupcake scarves. It’s so cute! I love the color options in Vanna’s Choice Baby. I want to use the leftovers for something fun. A bag, perhaps?

I got Twinkie’s book right before Denton was hit with the biggest ice storm I have ever seen in Texas. School was out for a week, and I couldn’t go to my usual yarn stores for supplies. I was itching to make one of her designs, so I slid over to Walmart and bought some Red Heart yarn for this pizza scarf. Red Heart is not ideal for a scarf because of how scratchy it is, but in a pinch, it’s not terrible. If I make it again, I’ll definitely use Malabrigo or something just as squishy.

Cross Stitch

When I started cross stitching in July of 2007, sites like Subversive Cross Stitch and Sprite Stitch did not exist. The craft did not interest me until I saw a magazine blurb about a guy who cross stitched video game sprites. Turning pixels into stitches was a brilliant idea! I got some software that turned your photos into patterns, downloaded some sprites, and went to town.

This new project is the first to not be video game related. I’ve been collecting cute pixel art over the years to turn into patterns, and I think I finally have a good reason to stitch one.

Star Flowers and Little Blue Urchins

Since school is taking up a lot of my time, I’ve been treating myself with fun, quick projects like this hot pad/trivet thing. When I started crocheting, it looked a lot like a floppy star fish, but after I folded and added the border, voila! It was a magical transformation.

I spent a good part of yesterday reading Dr Oomen’s blog, Resurrection Fern. I was inspired by her love of nature, her beautiful photos of lichenscapes and mushrooms, her snail pets, and how she incorporates her love of biology in her crafts. She was kind enough to share a pattern for one of her beautiful crocheted sea stones on the Purl Bee, so Molly and I went on another walk through the neighborhood. I don’t live near a river or sea, so my search was in vain. I was sad until I remembered I live near stores! I found a bag of 10 or so small river stones at Pier 1.

I used some mercerized cotton thread I had and gave it a shot. It doesn’t look quite like hers, but she uses vintage, repurposed thread and she must crochet very loosely because mine are not as lacy. Still, I really love this little stone! I’m going to try and make some more with different motifs, hook sizes, and colors, so I can gift them or put them in a bowl.

Spring!

My bff, Gwen, and I were at the Shabby Sheep in Dallas, and we saw a cute, red hat in their back room next to an impressive collection of Spud & Chlöe yarn.

One of the nice ladies who worked there found out the pattern was Vanilla Twist, so Gwen picked out some super squishy Malabrigo in Lettuce for me to knit it up. I love the cute, little cables and the purl stitch spiral!

My favorite thing about spring in Texas is the variety of flowering trees and shrubs. I took Molly for a walk today and was pleasantly surprised by some Texas Scarlets in bloom. I hope the Redbuds show their little pink buds soon. I went home and planted a little branch in what was left of the Malabrigo.
